Today, we have the CEO of House of Letisha – Letisha Matthew share her brand story.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LINE OF BUSINESS. HOW DID THE IDEA OF YOUR BUSINESS COME ABOUT?
My name is Letisha Mathew. I am the creative director of house of Letisha. At house of Letisha we make beautiful and amazing jewelry designs, neck pieces both for traditional and casual wears. Bridal accessories, waist beads, bags, purse, beaded foot wear and earrings.
House of Letisha was birthed while i was in the university. It actually started off like a joke, my mum is a very fashionable person. She makes beads even before beads became so trendy.
So I was back home one holiday and she pleaded with me to assist her with some of her jobs, so she could meet up on delivery. Even though i wasn’t that much Interested I obliged her.
I started in the morning and I got so engrossed and lost track of time. It became an exciting chore for me. My passion for beading grew and different ideas came in on how I can make trendy fashion beads to sell in school.
But i kept procrastinating. One semester, i was financially strained. I remember being locked out of my apartment and I had to beg on my knees for an extra week. Then i decided it was time to raise money and fend for myself. Few years later, interior decoration was added to houseofletisha, and then Tisha luxury hair came along.
WHY DO YOUR CUSTOMERS CHOOSE YOU OVER YOUR COMPETITORS?
1. our level of sincerity
2. ability to deliver on time.
3. Our top notch unique and quality products
4. And finally getting quality for less
HOW DID YOU FUND YOUR BUSINESS AT STARTUP?
After I made the decision to make money and not depend on my parents so much. I had saved up 10,000 Naira prior before that for my handouts. So I withdrew the money called my mum and told her about the business idea. I gave her the money to help me purchase the necessary materials to start up the business. So she bought them and brought it to the border for me. Yes I schooled in Benin Republic (2009/2010). And that was how we started.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAILURES AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM THEM?
One would be not reinvesting into the business. All the money i made went into bills. I was inconsistent at some point, gave out goods on credit and almost never got my money back in most cases and at a point I got really stuck, frustrated and lost.
I learnt in a very hard way not to sell on credit no matter who it was. Also not to spend money meant for growing the business. And lastly i learnt consistency is a great key for growing ones business.
WHAT SACRIFICES HAVE YOU HAD TO MAKE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?
Firstly ”SLEEP” I gave up my sleeping hours. Had to leave my “JOB” at a point just to have enough time.
Sacrificed most of my ”INCOME” to grow the business which i am very grateful for now.
