OMG! I find this interview hilarious, entertaining, inspiring, and at the same time educating.

Tomiwa managed to pull off all four in a single interview. Amazing.

Aside the fact that i had fun chatting with Tomiwa. His answers were quite indepth, and well put together. He has officially won our heart guys.

Don’t let me delay you any further.  Dive right into it.

Tell us about Tomiwa Tegbe; what’s your story? Where you’re from, age, educational background. Etc

I’m from Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. I have a BSc in Environmental management and Toxicology from the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta(FUNAAB). My story is that of a passionate creative following his bliss on the journey to greatness.

We have seen you take on intresting roles in movies, not leaving out series like Mtv shuga and My Siblings and I & on the real. And you wear your character so well. Tell us about being on these series – what’s it like working with the cast and crew?

I’m grateful for where I am now, grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had and for the privilege to share my craft with the rest of the world. I’ve been privileged to be on amazing projects I’m really proud of and it’s such a great feeling bringing memorable characters to life, even better when you get feedback from people from different spheres telling you about how these characters have resonated with them and how much they love and relate with them. I feel at that point, my work is pretty much done and I can say I have affected someone in a way or two. I’m grateful for the sheer amount of talents I’ve had the opportunity of working closely and sharing the same space with. Filmmaking is a collaborative effort so you’re just as good as your team and it makes the work really easy when you’re surrounded by amazing thespians and professionals, it makes showing up to work and making your call time daily really worth it. From working on these projects I’ve built solid and valuable relationships, friends turned family and I’m better for it all. I’ve had the opportunity to be surrounded by really amazing people on these projects and I look forward to even more awesome experiences.

Is it usually difficult fitting into a particular role?

Every role comes with it’s own challenges, it’s never the same experience with each role no matter how similar and that’s the beauty of acting, you get the opportunity to have a peak into different lives and walk in different shoes and make it as though it is indeed yours. As it is with every other profession, you have to stay ready and prepare, as an artist your skill has to meet preparation at all times because an actor prepares! Sometimes you find it easier to fit into certain roles than you do others but the bare minimum for you as an actor taking on a new character is to do your research and understudy to understand the psychology of the character and get yourself ready to take him/her on and wear him/her effortlessly. It’s a really fun process I love to go through over and over again no matter how grueling it is.

What attracted you to begin a career as an actor?

I was just really curious about people and what it’s like to be them Lol. I watch people keenly a lot and I was fascinated by how different we all are. Then I’ve always loved movies, I’ve always been a huge movie buff and it was so cool watching people say all those cool lines and walk and talk with so much ease and panache. I knew almost all the lines in every movie I watched that I’d start acting them out while washing plates, doing home chores or in front of the mirror, I talked to myself and made action movies in my head Lol. I loved seeing myself do that and I felt really great about myself so I thought, wouldn’t be so bad if I actually tried this out you know. I Joined my church drama group, later went on to head my secondary school fellowship drama group for years. I’d go on to join my theatre troupe in the university and at the same time headed the drama department in my church till I graduated. I got my first lead role from the very first audition I attended while I was on break in school and that sort of gave me the much needed conviction that this might just be worth turning into a career and here I am now. Been a bumpy ride but I’m grateful for the process.

What is the one thing,  people will be surprised to know about you?

Ha a lot o Lol. I have sweaty palms and feet. I draw/illustrate. I love comic books a lot. I love the smell of camphor and petrol. I’m not as stupid as I tend to be on TV Lol. I’m the nuisance of my family. I grew up in Ibadan. I’ve never really had pimples. I hate onions. I can go on and on, do we have time?

In which area would you like to improve as an actor?

We strive to be better daily as an artist, even in areas we feel we’ve already hacked but I’d like to improve on my enunciations and breathe control

What sort of acting roles will you be looking out for in the future?

O boy they’re plenty o but basically roles that will explore my range and depth as a performer, roles that will take me out of my being and stretch me beyond levels I ever imagined, that will make me discover parts of me I never knew existed

If you could choose, what three actors would you really want to work with?

In Nigeria; Bimbo Akintola, Gabriel Afolayan, Genevieve Nnaji

Aside acting, what else are you exploring?

Rapping….Lol just kidding. Content creation, merchandising and publishing, you’d get to find out more about that pretty soon. There’s a lot to explore really and I’m looking to following my bliss and purpose and discovering new levels and interests as I live and I’m eager to see them all unfold and watch where it leads. Yes to dreams coming true!

Movies or music?

Close call but see you can kidnap me yea but just make sure you stock my holding room with enough movies to make me forget my troubles, I’ll be fine Lol

Your favourite Nollywood Actors? And Hollywood?

Favorite Nollywood Actors; Gabriel Afolayan, Genevieve Nnaji, Nse Ikpe Etim, Bimbo Akintola, Joke Silver,Akin Lewis, Rita Dominic, Chimezie Imo, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Ruby Akubueze, Emeka Nwagbaroacha, Sharon Jatto. Favorite Hollywood Actors; Leonardo Dicaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hardy, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Eddie Redmayne, Viola Davis

Describe yourself in one word. And your life right now using movie titles.

Passionate. That’d be “All the way up” or “Pursuit of happyness” or “The incredible journey”

How long have you been acting?

I made my debut officially on screen in 2011, so I guess that makes it nine(9) years on screen now. On stage I really can’t tell what year exactly but started out as a child.

And how many movie projects have you been part of? (List them).

Can’t say how many to be honest but if I was to list a few, here goes; To have and to hold, My Siblings and I, MTV Shuga, Kasala, Kasanova, Psycho, On the real, 3 is company, Ehis bitters, How to marry a billionaire amongst others

What would be  a question you’d be afraid to tell the truth on.

“If you were offered $100billion to stop watching movies for the rest of your life, what would you do?” The thought of a life without movies really sucks, also the thought of passing up on $100billion is…..not nice at all Lol

In the Nigerian Entertainment world today. Who would you say inspires you to become more in terms of Acting?

I think that would be Nse Ikpe Etim, Joke silver and Gabriel Afolayan, their range and presence is amazing and such a beauty to watch. Also inspired by their strong and principled work ethic.

What is your biggest/weirdest fear?

Ermmm….fear of uncertainty maybe. Realizing tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and plans might not follow through because you know, life just happens when it wants to. Also maybe fear of my gas finishing when I come back home late from work and I’m trying to whip up something to eat, that thing can make a grown man cry hot tears mehn.

What would be your super power if you had one ?

I’d have said power to read minds but that thing can drive you crazy fam. So it’d be the power to be omnipresent, because this our work ehnnn odikwa crazy sometimes, it can require you to be in more than one place at a time and you’ll have really crazy schedules and appointments to make. When you consider factors like the deadly Lagos traffic and it’s cousins, this power will make your life extremely easy, you can be present at many places at a time and make everyone happy, that’s pure cruise haha!

How do you try to improve on your acting skills?

Practice! Nothing beats practice, the tool has to stay sharpened. Also I try to find time to read and watch acting resource materials online, attend workshops and classes. As a movie buff myself, I watch movies a lot also to study the performances of other actors, their choices, nuances and take notes and see how I can apply them in improving my skillset.

What’s the weirdest question you’ve been asked?

“Why are you so dumb?” This person asked this question in the most carefree yet deadpan way possible that it made me wonder if she was being serious or kidding or if she was referring to me or my TV character Lol. I didn’t know what to say I just kept laughing.

What’s your most annoying habit?

Tomiwa Played Wasiu on MTV Shuga

I cream my feet with body lotion at intervals no matter the time of day but most especially at night. It’s actually annoying to me because my body cream never lasts but I can’t help it, at least for now Lol so I can imagine how those around me must feel about it.
