Happiness is a choice.

A lot of people fall into the error of looking for happiness in all the wrong places. They rely entirely on what life offers and try to squeeze as much happiness out of it as they can. They look to the most unlikely places to find happiness. Sometime placing relinquishing their peace of mind just to find happiness in the company of another. The truth, simply put is ‘Happiness comes from within’. Happiness as well as sadness are products of choices we make. No one can make anyone happy or sad unless they let it happen. You are in charge of how you feel at every point in life, that’s the fact. Own it.

What does it mean to be happy?  

Experiencing the effect of favourable fortune; having the feeling arising from the consciousness of well being or of enjoyment; enjoying good of any kind, as peace, tranquility, comfort, contentment, joyous. Now, that is what I am talking about!!

There is nothing as sweet as having peace of mind, enjoying all you have in the comfort of your Zone, not expecting to get it from anyone.

What gets most people is that they allow their surroundings define them and determine the state of their well-being. The philosophy of what you give is what you receive is a myopic way of thinking. The truth is that you should not expect the same level of love you show others to be shown to you in return, do not allow the actions of others influence your state of mind.  The greatest happiness in life is the conviction that you are loved, you know what love is, you feel its absence or presence in your life.

Have you ever asked why our forebears lived longer than we do today? Why the world seemed easier then than it does now? They had no technology to empower them, no Television sets to keep them entertained at home, no cars to aid the commute to work. What they had were farmlands to tend, rivers to fish, forests to hunt. They also had something unique that our generation doesn’t have, “UNITY & LOVE”. They shared what was available, if it was enough to go round. They had time to sit together and chat, tell stories and make themselves happy. They fought side by side for what was right, loved each other as they were. They were content with the basic things around them and never relied on external sources for happiness.

Today, everything has changed, a young man or lady would say I’m not happy because my battery is down and my phone has gone off, seriously?  I have been in a bad mood since morning because my Car broke down. Woo; so, your car is your source of happiness. In the last two months, I have not found happiness because he broke my heart. Really?!!!, I’m having headache already. So, he owns your life and happiness now abi? Oya kill yourself na, so we will know that your boyfriend and not God created you.

You must learn to derive happiness from the simplest of things. First, love God. Second, love yourself. Third, be content with what you have. You might not have it all but be happy for the little things. Enjoy every moment; do not allow disappointments to suppress your state of mind. Like the saying goes “every disappointment is a blessing”. Learn to walk through it and let go of anger and hate, it might corrupt and turn you into something you will be unable to recognize. You can choose to be a happy person, regardless of the circumstances surrounding you. You have the ability to create real and lasting happiness, life is stressful sometimes, but it’s our choice to allow it tear us down or not.

It’s not too late to make your happiness your priority. Learn to feel good about yourself without feeling the need for anyone’s approval. There are situations where things are so difficult that you begin to think of what tomorrow would be, but let me tell you, over thinking ruins you, ruins the situation, twist things around, makes you worry and just makes everything worse than it already is. There is no secret recipe, no formula to find happiness. Happiness does not come from any external source. Your happiness lies within you. Have it in mind that you have the power to choose what to accept and what to let go.

Let’s take a look at 10 keys of happiness.

Giving:                       Always learn to do things for others. Give and don’t expect anything in return.

Relationship:             Connect with people, it helps to ease stress.

Exercise:                    Take care of your body, always.

Awareness:               learn to live your life mindfully.

Experience:               Keep learning new things.

Direction:                   Have goals to look forward to.

Resilience:                 Always find ways to bounce back.

Emotions:                   Look for what is good.

Acceptance:           Be comfortable with who you are.

Meaning:                   Be part of something big.

Enjoy every bit of life and always remember that happiness it’s in you, “Find it”.
